July Sprints 7/22/06
Watkins Glen (long)
The July Sprints Regional was Andrew’s first appearance
at the Glen. When we arrived the weather looked favorable but hopes of a dry
race were quickly replaced with hopes of being able to keep the car tents
secured to the ground during the deluge. While Matt was able to make
qualifying, continuous motor problems held him back from completing any fast
laps. Andrew was unlucky as well. His run group was delayed due to rain and
fog and was eventually released to run after the fog had cleared (yeah
right!).
Andrew's first qualifying session was not the greatest weather wise. Despite
constant hydroplaning and trouble with visibility due to the fog, Andrew
managed to get several decent laps in. Luckily, the next day cleared up and
Andrew got a chance to strut his stuff. Andrew was pushing through the field
right from the start and was able to pick up a number of positions before
the race was ended early due to a major accident. When the smoke cleared,
Andrew took 17th in an SM field of nearly 40 cars. The ITS race did not end
quite as well for Ridgespeed. Starting from the back of the pack, Matt had
worked up though most of the field before having to pull it into the pits
due to engine trouble. All in all however the July Sprints was a very proud
weekend for RidgeSpeed Racing.
