July Sprints 7/23/05

Watkins Glen (long)

(ITS)

First race ever! Everything started out great, I had passed annual tech and was looking forward to getting on the track. After two qualifying sessions I had qualified I believe 30th out of about 50 (we were with ITE and T1 as well). It was an 11 lap race on the long course which was quite an experience for my first race. All was going well, I had moved up several positions by the half way point, holding pretty steady. Finally in lap 9 the oil temp gauge suddenly spiked. Entering the uphill turn 7, I hoped I would be able to make it to the boot strait and pull it over in a safe spot. Nearly there, the car started to slow and fill with smoke. The engine was toasted and I pulled it over on the grass. Lets hope in the future one race does not equal one motor!

Watkins Glen (long)

Race 1 (ITS)

Armed with a new motor, and determined not to blow it up, we were back at the Glen for my second race.  Turned out to be a very popular weekend, ITS was combined with ITA composing a field of roughly 60 cars for the first race. Only getting one qualifying session, I qualified 19th overall. It was a good clean race, and the new engine felt great. I was able to steadily move up the field, crossing the checker in 12th place overall (9th in class). We were very pleased to get our first top ten finish in our second race.

Watkins Glen (short)

Race 2 (ITS)

After the success in yesterday’s race, we hoped we could again finish top ten. This was my first race on the Watkins short course (nascar), and was very excited to give it a shot. The field was a bit smaller for this race, about 50 cars. Again with only one qualifying session I was able to qualify 18th overall. The race like yesterday went very well. After the initial carnage in the first few laps I found myself spending most of the race by myself running qualifying laps. I was able to finish in 11th place overall and 7th in class. I really enjoyed the short course and look forward to running it again. Overall the weekend was a tremendous success with two top ten finishes, we could not ask for a better season closer.
